Why Grow Plants on Walls?

Project Feature BowlDogs

Step into BowlDogs Family Entertainment Center in North Liberty, Iowa, and you’ll find more than just bowling lanes, axe-throwing and arcade games. A stunning LiveWall paired with custom water features transforms the space designed by Kelsey Taylor of Signature Design. This LiveWall features cascading waterfalls and lush greenery. It’s a statement of how thoughtful design can enhance both the environment and the guest experience.

Kelsey chose the LiveWall product because it is an architectural grade system that is well-engineered, and the venue will see many visitors throughout the day

“We also found that our initial questions were answered promptly. Lisa, our LiveWall Sales Specialist, was very patient with all the questions we had. We knew that we would receive full support during our first installation of the product.”

Kelsey collaborated with architects, engineers, and contractors to coordinate project parameters. She created a 3D concept for client visualization and detailed construction documents for the wall. Using LiveWall's Planting Guide, she selected plants suited for a low-light, automatically irrigated system. Her husband Peter, an engineer, brought the vision to life by installing plumbing and electrical, including auto-fill lines for the water features and a custom sump pump for drainage.

When Signature Design joined the project, the building was under construction, and drywall was already up. Several obstacles and restrictions had to be addressed. The simple, easy-to-assemble LiveWall system proved the perfect choice for this area.

The BowlDogs project presented unique challenges:

  • Plumbing and electrical had not been stubbed in, requiring coordination with architects and engineers. Without a floor drain, Peter designed and installed a sump system to outlet irrigation water outside the building.
  • The site lacked windows, so plants were selected for low-light conditions, and NorbBotanic Grow Bulbs provided LED light with the correct spectrum for growth.
  • Custom water feature basins required enclosure, so a knee wall with a plant row was proposed to disguise plumbing. The LiveWall system allowed an additional row in front.

According to Kelsey Taylor, “Overall, this was a challenging project, and we learned so much! We’re grateful for the support of LiveWall experts and excited to hear about visitors' experiences. We hope this inspires future projects!"
