Hortech’s Living Masterpiece: A Butterfly Takes Flight

Hortech’s newly unveiled headquarters is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. At the heart of this architectural marvel is a breathtaking LiveWall® that transforms a once-ordinary wall into a vibrant, living masterpiece. Inspired by the delicate beauty of butterflies, the living wall symbolizes rebirth, growth, and Hortech’s dedication to creating a greener world.

Designed to complement the building’s other green features, such as the rooftop LiveWall and perimeter planted fences, the Butterfly LiveWall® is a harmonious addition to the overall landscape. Its strategic placement and meticulous plant selection create a stunning visual focal point that balances and enhances the surrounding greenery.

The heart of this living artwork lies in its simple yet carefully curated plant palette. Chosen for their compatible growth habits and striking color contrasts, the plants come together to form a living tapestry reminiscent of a butterfly’s wings. Euphorbia ‘Diamond Mountain’ makes up the white backdrop.  Coleus ‘Black Star’ outlines the butterfly and Impatiens ‘Compact Orange’ decorates the wings.

Installation of the LiveWall® was surprisingly seamless, with the biggest challenge being a logistical one – reaching the topmost planters with a standard warehouse ladder. Despite this minor hurdle, the process showcased the efficiency and user-friendliness of the LiveWall® system.

At the core of this south-facing LiveWall® is Hortech’s proprietary technology. Standard-sized planters are irrigated through the mounting rails with tool-free spray nozzles.  The irrigation runs for 2 minutes per day on the top row and only 1 minute per day to the other rows, ensuring optimal hydration for the plants. A simple orbit controller regulates the watering schedule, providing the plants with the precise amount of moisture they need to thrive.

Hortech’s butterfly-inspired LiveWall® is more than just a beautiful addition to their new headquarters; it’s a living embodiment of the company’s mission to restore balance between nature and the built environment. By demonstrating the feasibility and aesthetic appeal of vertical gardens, Hortech is leading the way towards a greener, more sustainable future.
