A Living Wall That Evolves: Replanting with Annuals and Perennials

The Rapid Spring 2026The Rapid fully grown in, August 11th, 2026

One of the greatest advantages of a LiveWall® system is that it isn’t locked into a single planting strategy. Unlike traditional architectural features, a living wall can evolve alongside the needs of its owner. As plant performance, aesthetic goals, and maintenance priorities change over time, LiveWall’s® removable planter inserts make it easy to refresh, replant, and adapt a living wall for years to come.

Whether you’re looking to introduce seasonal color, replace underperforming plants, or completely redesign a planting palette, LiveWall® provides the flexibility to make changes without replacing the wall itself.

Why Living Walls Evolve

Every living wall is unique. Plant performance can vary based on climate, sunlight, maintenance practices, and seasonal weather conditions. As a result, many owners discover that their ideal planting strategy changes over time.

Some choose perennials for their long-term potential. In mild climates, many perennial species can thrive for years with minimal replacement. However, in northern climates, overwintering success can vary depending on weather conditions and site exposure.

Others prefer annuals, which provide predictable results, vibrant seasonal color, and an expansive plant palette. Annuals also make it easy to refresh the appearance of a wall from year to year and often simplify maintenance planning.

The good news is that LiveWall® doesn’t require owners to commit to one approach forever. Because the system is designed for easy replanting, annuals and perennials can be mixed, replaced, or changed entirely as needs evolve.

The Flexibility to Replant and Refresh

Traditional green wall systems can make plant replacement a complicated and labor-intensive process. LiveWall® was designed differently.

Each plant grows in an individual planter insert that can be easily removed, replanted, and returned to the wall. Rather than dismantling sections of the installation, maintenance teams can work with individual planters, making seasonal updates and plant replacement far more efficient.

This flexibility allows owners to experiment with new plant combinations, introduce seasonal displays, replace plants that are not performing as expected, or transition from one planting strategy to another. The wall itself remains in place while the planting design continues to evolve.

How The Rapid’s LiveWall® Evolved Over Time

A great example of this flexibility can be found at The Rapid Central Station in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

When the wall was first installed in 2014, it was planted primarily with perennials. As with many living walls in northern climates, some species performed well, while others struggled to survive Michigan’s winters.

Over time, plants that did not consistently overwinter were replaced with annuals, allowing the wall to maintain a more colorful appearance throughout the growing season. As maintenance teams gained experience with the installation, they found that annuals provided more predictable results, greater seasonal color, and a simpler management strategy.

Eventually, the decision was made to transition the entire wall to annual plantings. Today, the wall is refreshed each spring with new plants, creating a vibrant display and eliminating concerns about winter survival.

This evolution was made possible by LiveWall’s® removable planter inserts. Rather than replacing the wall or undertaking a major renovation, individual planters could be removed, replanted, and reinstalled as planting strategies changed. More than a decade after installation, the wall continues to thrive while adapting to the owner’s needs and goals.

After they replanted their wall this spring, Tony Williams, Facility Supervisor at The Rapid, said that he feels it is one of the best investments The Rapid has made.  “I always get a little sad to see the beautiful design fade and die off each fall, but I get really excited to see how the new planting design will come to life each spring!”

Built for Long-Term Flexibility

The best living walls are not static installations but living systems that grow and change over time.

Whether that means replacing a few plants, introducing fresh seasonal color, or completely reimagining a planting palette, LiveWall® gives owners the freedom to adapt. The story of The Rapid Central Station demonstrates that a successful living wall isn’t defined by the plants chosen on day one, but by the flexibility to evolve for years to come.

With removable planter inserts and unlimited planting possibilities, LiveWall® helps ensure every living wall can continue growing, changing, and thriving long after it is installed.
