Living Wall Brings Nature to a Nantucket Retaining Wall

Jurga Quebe, Landscape Designer and owner of Sunshine Gardening Inc., a landscaping company located on Nantucket Island, MA, creates landscape designs, installations, and performs maintenance, focusing on perennial gardens, meadows, containers, and window boxes, which are very popular on the island.

But Jurga always wanted to try installing and planting a green wall, yet hadn’t had an opportunity to do so.

That changed recently when she was hired by developer, Hans Dalgaard, to design the landscape of a large and beautiful spec home located at 51 Weweeder Ave, Nantucket, MA (now on the market for sale). The home’s design included a little patio on the basement level, surrounded by a very tall cement retaining wall. It needed a creative design solution to make the wall look more attractive. So, Jurga researched online and contacted a few companies that sell green wall systems and concluded that the LiveWall® system would work best for her project. Why? She said that it is a perfect solution for walls like this. Then Hans and Jurga worked closely together on the location, size, and shape of the wall.

Jurga liked that “the LiveWall® planter boxes are relatively narrow and don’t stick out from the wall too much. With its modular design, I could create many size variations.” She liked that it has more “pixels” (meaning you can plant more plants per square foot), allowing more interesting patterns. “The planters have a nice angle, so you don’t see much of the containers once they’re planted. Additionally, it comes with all the components needed for a straightforward installation.” Jurga also mentioned that her LiveWall sales representative, Lisa Wagasky, was one of the most helpful, responsive, and informative representatives she talked to. “It was so easy to communicate with her.”

“The wall was fun and easy to plant, because it comes with the inserts where you can fit 2 – 4 plants. So first, I laid them out on the lawn and designed the pattern.” She purchased fairly large plants so they would cover the front of the boxes for instant effect. Then, she numbered the inserts to keep the pattern organized while placing them in the planters. “It was easy and fun to place them on the wall. It looks beautiful, and it enhances the place significantly. It is a cost-effective way to really glamorize a space.”
