Improving Retail Business with LiveWalls® at Breton Village

Living walls go beyond any other siding or wall treatment option when it comes to the multitude of benefits they provide to retail businesses. Green walls are an opportunity to brand your business, show you care about people and the environment, and create a space that is inviting for your customers.
Great examples of this are the two LiveWalls® installed at Breton Village. Breton Village is a 200,000-square-foot upscale, open-air shopping center located at 1830 Breton Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI. It blends modern retail with a neighborhood feel. It features a curated selection of brands, including Lululemon, Anthropologie, Warby Parker, West Elm, and locally owned boutiques. It also includes D&W Fresh Market as an anchor store.
In 2017, two LiveWalls® were installed at the newly renovated Breton Village. One large wall, measuring 33’-4” wide x 14’-3” high, was installed on the exterior of what is now Mason Jones. A second, smaller wall measuring 10’-8” wide x 5’-3” high was installed on a mechanical screen wall located between Jos. A. Bank and what is now Lululemon. Both walls are prominently seen from the street and the main entrance of the shopping center. Each spring, a new planting of various colorful annuals in unique patterns provides a fresh look at the shopping center.
So how do these walls benefit the retail businesses at Breton Village? Besides the obvious visual attractiveness and elevated appeal, LiveWalls® also provide businesses with improved productivity, profits, and marketing, as well as health, aesthetic, and conservation benefits.
Adding plants and natural elements to retail and workplace spaces brings clear benefits. Stores with greenery see higher sales because customers buy more and pay premium prices in nature-inspired settings. Plants also encourage longer visits and repeat customers, especially when used both indoors and outdoors. Vertical plant walls save floor space for seating and displays.
In workplaces, biophilic design improves attendance, reduces absenteeism, and boosts staff retention. Plants in workplaces increase productivity, reduce stress, and create a healthier, more efficient environment.
A living wall shows that you care about your community, health, and the environment. It serves as vibrant, fragrant signage that doubles as a powerful marketing tool. Beyond aesthetics, living walls promote community well-being by fostering pride, trust, and civic engagement, while reducing violence, vandalism, and litter. They can also help meet green space requirements in many zoning ordinances, saving time and money during approvals and potentially earning tax credits or other incentives.
Green walls help reduce noise because plants, soil, and trapped air act as natural sound insulators, which is ideal for buildings near airports, railways, or busy roads. They also mask odors when placed around recycling or waste areas, making these spaces look better and smell fresher.
