Last April, Hortech, Inc. moved into its new office, and as the parent company to LiveWall® and LiveRoof®, it was only fitting to incorporate green roofs and livings walls into our new office. So, in addition to two LiveRoof green roofs, we included 8 indoor LiveWalls, for sound attenuation, air purification and beautification, and three outdoor LiveWalls. Outdoors, there is a LiveWall surrounding the patio, another surrounding the rooftop mechanicals, and a third on a highly visible south facing wall. The third one is our “marque wall” featuring a giant butterfly—signifying sustainability and the rebirth of our facility.
This beautiful butterfly wall is noticed as you drive into the facility, and it is striking. But what we’ve never seen before is a LiveWall becoming a songbird sanctuary. We are not birders, but they appear to be house sparrows, and every day at sunset they arrive to spend the night nestled in the plants. And, each morning as the sun arises, they awaken with a melodic song, then fly away… to do whatever birds do during the daytime. This has provided joy and entertainment for staff and visitors... in addition to being a safe dormitory for the birds.
It's too early to say what we’ll plant next spring or whether it will be another butterfly shape, but hopefully these cheerful birds will return for another season!
Whether you’re looking to beautify your building, support the natural world, or grow herbs and vegetables on a vertical space, LiveWall is an innovative solution that benefits everyone—plants, people, butterflies and songbirds.
